Great preview. Keep a close eye on Barak Itzhaki or Amit Ben Sushan if Benayoun is not fit enough to play. They are both tricky wingers with good ball skills who could cause the older and more lead-footed Greeks some problems down the wing..

Itzhaki had a great chance on a mini-break but Greece ‘keeper Chalkias denied him calmly. No sign of Sushan, maybe on Wednesday now that Benayoun seems very doubtful for the replay after a stubborn decision to play. Ben Sahar, however, was something else.

I remember some of these from his (unfortunate) days at Bayern. Absolute classics!

I think Greece will win the rest of their games and qualify. I’m sure they have the team to do it

Greece will definitely still qualify for at least the playoff spot. I think that wins in both the remaining games will do the trick. More importantly Switzerland still has to play Israel.

sorry, but Egypt is better in this field particularly; zambia, rwanda and algeria is the easiest group ever we had in a qualification campaign but look at us now, struggling :) :)

Great post. I don’t know how we screwed up this group so bad, but it qualifies as another Greek tragedy.

I would actually prefer to play the first match at home. There are pros and cons to both, but here are some pros to playing the first match at home

1. Can build momentum with a home win as the first match will be tougher for the opposition. A solid win may be demoralizing for the other team and have them play just a little worse on the return leg than they would have if it were a fresh start at home. Team psychology must not be underestimated.

2. In the event of a tie on aggregate, you know exactly how many away goals would be needed to win on the return leg. A 1-1 tie may have been a suitable result if you had played away first, but if play at home and somehow draw the match 2-2, you know you will need more of an attacking formation for the 2nd leg.

3. You team will be less tired from traveling. If you play at home first, all you have to do is travel once to Ukraine before that match. Ukraine will be traveling twice in a matter of a few days.

–Granted, playing away the second leg means the possibility of playing extra time away from home. But hopefully with the advantages stated above, extra time won’t be necessary

Good luck. Ukraine is a tough one.
As for Chris’s post on the main page… at least 50% of his predictions will fail.

Congratulations to Greece for qualifying!
I must admit I thought they would be beaten by Ukraine, so well done for proving me wrong and see you in South Africa!

WTF is up with this article? Greece has not earned to be in the World Cup in the past few months? They lost their qualifying group by 1 point. Tell me 3 points, then I might side with you. Skeleton of Schevchenko? Have you never seen Greece play? When they are on their A game and they know whos dangerous opposition, they cripple these players by gluing on to them. Get real man and cut a break. Your bittersweet posting is a sad excuse to pay tribute to a team that has potential on the world circuit. Besides, what does 1994 have to do with 2010? The only thing that remain the same for Greece is the flag and its colors.

First off, thanks for leaving a comment Umit. Whilst I admire and am rather surprised by your passion in defending Greece, where most other (and I assume you to be a neutral here) neutral fans are quick to brand Greece as an ultra-defensive outfit without paying any real attention to their credentials, one needs to be realistic.

And far from the posting being “bittersweet” – as a Greek fan I feel privileged to be growing up in the national team’s most successful era – it is tending more toward a dark humour and realism.

Yes, Greece did lose their group by “only 1 point” but the only real challenge presented in that group was by an ordinary Switzerland outfit that wouldn’t trouble the majority of the 32 nations at the World Cup – and Greece lost to them. Twice.

As for the play-offs, upon reflection, Greece were fortunate enough to be drawn with a side that, whilst offering experience a good balance of experience and youth, were ultimately over-reliant on an ageing Schevchenko who was a skeleton of his former self.

Did Greece have one of the easiest passages to the tournament in Europe and the world? Without question.

References to ‘94 serve to contextualize however the accomplishments of the national team under Rehhagel, far from being any slight on the current squad. Greece has come a long way since then and Greek fans can safely approach South Africa confident that there won’t be a repeat of the US humiliation.

I agree with Umit, give the Greeks a break. They play to their strengths and get the results. Scores matter at the end of the day not the fashion in which the game is played. I mean Italy and Germany won so many championships relying on defence and are they criticized??
Yes we were in a relatively easy group for europe but we earned it with our ranking from previous campaigns, thats what happens when you are ranked top 10 in the world, you get seeded and get easier groups.
To say that Greece’s qualfying campaign was the easiest apart from New Zealand is joke. Give me Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica and any other Asian or Concacaf group to qualify from any day!!!!
Your quick to bag out the swiss, but you do know this is their 8th WC appearance??? or the fact that they have qualified for 4 straight majors in a row???
What about Israel??? Check out their record and see when was the last time they lost a competitive fixture on home soil??
Hell even Moldova had a draw with last years EURO 2008 semi-finalist Turkey during that qualifying campaign.
Sure there were harder groups in UEFA but the end of the day we qualified, hell we beat Ukraine in Ukraine, something the English or the Croats could not do.
This is a Greek blog, support your team, dont mock it!

How does a guy with a Turkish name support the Greek NT so vehemently? Sounds like this paragraph went through a translating program.

Anyway, the post is fine–I think the Ukraine botched their group the same way we botched ours by losing to a perfectly beatable Swiss side TWICE for insane reasons. The fact that we got through is simply due to the fact that our luck was greater than theirs. Football is sometimes like that.

Take nothing away from Sammy or Salp–that play was world class, but we really didn’t do enough to win either game, and clearly Tzorvas was charmed in that away match.

In any event, WC ‘94 is our only link to the competition, and was a dismal failure due to tactics (and bouzoukia at 6 in the morning), which is a complaint we all have with our present management. So reference it all you like, it’s still relevant.

Since you guys have a German coach, I wish you well.

I take it for granted you know you do not have the most artistic of players in your squad. But that was no different in 2004. And we all know what happened. :-)

Much of the magic of football comes from the lack of predictabilty. Good luck and greets from Germany. :-)

Hi,

Greece is the dullest and most unimaginative team in the World Cup. Football at its ugliest. Apart from national pride, I don’t know how anyone can support this team.

I hope they fall to pieces in June and be shown up for the footballing farce they are.
