Dellas announces retirement
Euro 2004 hero Traianos Dellas has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. Since 2010, he had been playing on his third tour of duty with AEK Athens. Earlier in his career, Dellas played at Anorthosis, Roma, Perugia, and other clubs in Greece and Europe. His spell at Roma, saw him become a favorite of Fabio Capello and contribute to a strong second place finish in the Serie A in 2004, a period in which the club as a whole performed poorly. He is most remembered for his summer heroics at Euro 2004 when he marshaled the defense, helping Antonis Nikopolidis keep clean sheets against France, Czech Republic, and Portugal. His swan song moment came when he scored a silver goal against the Czech Republic to take Greece to the final.
