Where will Gekas go?

December 11th, 2008 | By: Peter Katsiris | No Comments »

After two successful campaigns to commence his career in the German Bundesliga, it now appears Theofanis Gekas has lost his touch as a reputable Bundesliga striker.

It has been a miserable year for Gekas, with little success with both club and country. With Leverkusen relying more and more on Stefan Kiessling and Patrick Helmes, Gekas’ failure to net for his employers does little to earn him a starting role with ‘Werkself’.

The Greece international shocked many with a twenty-goal output for VfL Bochum two years ago. With Gekas the go-to-guy for Bochum in that campaign, the former Panathinaikos striker got rave reviews by his former employers – who had sent Gekas on a one-year loan to Bochum – as well as many Bundesliga clubs.

The ensuing summer he swapped Bochum for Leverkusen, and signed on at BayArena club Bayer Leverkusen. Expected to reproduce his goal rush with his new club, the pressure to score appeared to be too much for Gekas; however, he still managed to notch a respectable output of eleven goals in the Bundesliga.

As frustration boils over for Gekas and Leverkusen management, it appears the Greece international could be headed for a BayArena exit sooner rather than later. Reports within Germany and Greece have linked Gekas with several clubs, but reports in recent weeks have seen FC Köln emerge as favourites in the striker sweepstakes.

In Greece, the media hasn’t shied away from linking the Greece international with a move back home. In many conflicting reports, there have been several rumors linking Gekas with a move back to Panathinaikos; however, several sources have suggested Gekas could join Olympiacos.

With Gekas simply in need of a kick-start, a change of surroundings could be the best tonic. A move back home may not, however, be the best choice for a player with plenty to offer. As Köln continues to be the likely destination for Gekas, the move is still in question as Köln finds itself pursuing for a Lukas Podolski return from Bayern Munich.

Despite all the speculation over Gekas’ future, nothing will be certain until the winter transfer period opens up on January 1st; even then there might be plenty still up in the air.
