Interest from Milan continues to linger for Katsouranis

January 8th, 2009 | By: Peter Katsiris | No Comments »

When reports initially broke out about a move to AC Milan for Benfica’s Kostas Katsouranis, it seemed to be a joke. Now, a week after reports revealed Carlo Ancelotti was interested in recruiting the Greece international, it seems there is a possibility Katsouranis could be on his way to the San Siro.

The ‘Rossoneri’, have been devastated by the loss of Gennaro Gattuso and it appears Katsouranis is an ideal replacement for the Italy international. Not a typical club to be associated with one of Greece’s finest, Milan would be a stellar club for the former AEK Athens star.

Katsouranis had asked to leave the Lisbon club in the summer, after an on-field altercation with club captain Luisao left the Greek star on edge within the Benfica ranks. Interest continued to come from Katsouranis’ former Greek Super League employers AEK Athens, but Katsouranis acknowledged a move to Panathinaikos in the future was a possibility, but never to archrivals Olympiacos.

Though AEK was an immediate possibility in the summer, the price tag was far too high for AEK to have a Katsouranis return.

With Katsouranis acknowledging Milan’s interest, it seems the Greece international could be the first of his kind to play for the ‘Rossoneri’. While Milan might be willing to pay up for one of Greece’s most crucial contributors, the only obstacle in reaching a deal maybe Katsouranis’ current employers, who in the past have proven to be tough negotiators over the rights to the Greek midfielder.
