Greece slips further in FIFA Rankings, now 20th overall
Despite drawing World Champions Italy last month, the latest edition of the FIFA Coca-Cola World Rankings, which were released on Wednesday, saw Greece slip two spots to 20th. It was the final event in what has been a disappointing end to what was supposed to be a successful year for the Greek National Team.
Strong results [...]
Greece, Italy play to a draw
A defensive duel between two Mediterranean rivals played to a stalemate finale on Wednesday night, as Italy pegged back to hold Greece to a 1-1 draw at the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium. Without their star players for the most part, Greece and Italy failed to create any convincing scoring opportunities – apart from either tally.
The first [...]
Adriatic rivals meet in Piraeus
Club duties will be put aside this week, as the international stage returns to the main spotlight. Some of that spotlight will be shared by the rekindling of an old rivalry in Piraeus, as Italy makes the trip across the Adriatic Sea to meet Greece just outside the Greek capital. Although the match is billed [...]
Greece slips to 18th in World Rankings
FIFA released its annual FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings on Wednesday, and to no surprise the Greek National Team slipped one spot to fall to eighteenth place in the monthly rankings. After beating Moldova 3-0 at home, Greece was unable to reproduce that same performance four days later against Switzerland. Losing to the Swiss 2-1, Greece’s perfect [...]
Greece climbs one spot in World Rankings
Greece’s recent victories over Luxembourg and Latvia were reflected on the monthly FIFA World Rankings by rising one spot to seventeenth. Greece, who sat eighth ahead of EURO 2008, was in a free fall ever since their poor showing at the quadrennial continental championships.
The top 10 seems miles away for Greece, especially with traditional powerhouses [...]
Riga the next stop for travelling Greece
After a solid start to their Qualifying campaign on Saturday, Greece will look for more of the same tomorrow night when they meet Latvia in Riga. Saturday’s 3-0 win over Luxembourg was good measure for a Greece side looking to erase their disastrous EURO 2008 campaign; but the test will be much stiffer on Wednesday.
A [...]
Greece begins road to South Africa
Greece returns to action on Saturday, as the ‘Galanoleuki’ open up their World Cup Qualifying schedule with a trip to tiny Luxembourg. Last month’s ‘prova generale’ against Slovakia, showed Greece is in good shape after a poor run in June’s European Championships.
Last time the Greeks started a World Cup Qualifying campaign, they were on a [...]
Gekas strikes twice in win over Slovakia
Returning to action for the first time since their early exit from the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, Greece managed to secure a 2-0 win over Slovakia in Bratislava last night. A pair of goals from second-half substitute Theofanis Gekas gave Greece its first win over Slovakia.
Using the opportunity to scout several players, Otto [...]
Greece ready to erase EURO nightmares
The Greek National Team returns to action tomorrow night in Bratislava against Slovakia in an International Friendly. Thanks to miserable run at EURO 2008 by dropping all three games, Greece was eliminated in the group stage and never put up much of title defense. Now the Piratiko returns to action for the first time, and [...]
Ninis returns to Greek National Team
Otto Rehhagel has made his final call-ups ahead of his side’s international friendly against Slovakia on August 20th. Visiting the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, the friendly against the Slovaks will be Greece’s first action since their early exit from the European Championships in mid-June. After making call-ups of international players earlier in the month, the German [...]
